Elements

When I began working with clay one of the first things I noticed was how calming it is. It can be meditative; bringing our attention down to earth. Using our hands to create and connect with the element of earth, there's no wonder the sense of grounding I felt.

As I continued to learn, I realized ALL the elements of nature play a part:

Earth - the clay itself, comes from the ground. Clay forms from the weathering of rocks and has components of minerals and soil.

Water - the moisture in the clay is what keeps it workable. We consider the different stages of the clay which relates directly to the water content. It’s also used to recycle old clay.

Fire - The kiln which works like a volcano, gets super hot and turns delicate objects into stone. Fire represents heat, energy, a tool for transformation.

Air - we always have to consider the flow of air when designing a piece. Air needs somewhere to escape when it’s heated. Any visually appealing piece has an intuitive movement through space.

This approach is especially interesting considering the elements' spiritual and cultural importance.
