Photographing 3D Art

It can be challenging to convey the details of 3D artwork in photos.  A good photo needs to convey a sense of dimensionality and ideally textures as well.  Lighting the art is one of the most important factors as the shadows of the object help greatly in providing a sense of dimension.  Softer and even lighting will produce softer more subtle shadows and can help to bring out textures as well.  Harder more directional light makes for stronger shadows and can emphasize edges. White and light backgrounds make it easier to see shadows cast from the art and can help to suggest the 3D shape of the object  Darker backgrounds emphasize the shadows that fall on the object and can do a better job of isolating the piece.  Taking photographs from multiple angles as well as some detail close up photos can also help the viewer experience the piece. It can be challenging to have a consistent colour and exposure if using automatic mode on a camera as well.
