Working in Three Dimensions
As a 2D artist I’m used to working on flat surfaces. 2D work is all about optical illusions. Creating visuals with depth that can only exist on one plane. Working in three dimensions you must adopt a different approach. It’s important to consider the overall feeling of a piece. How it will look from all angles and points of view. The way it feels to hold, especially if the piece is something functional like a mug. Form takes on a new meaning when it is something you can touch and feel. Suddenly you must account for weight.
Why are certain objects so tactile? Satisfying to hold? Is this object going to be purely decorative, functional, or a mix of the two? All the things I found myself contemplating as I began working with ceramics.
